Solar Pool Heating

What will solar do for youSwim in comfort, courtesy of the sun.

  • Swim year-round
  • Eliminate energy costs to heat your pool
  • 12 year manufacturers' panel & hardware warranty
  • Enjoy maximum comfort and minimal maintenance
  • Environmentally safe way to heat your pool

A solar pool heating system is the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to heat your swimming pool. They work extremely well in sunny South Florida, collecting free heat from the sun and transferring it to your pool water. Using a Stilwell solar pool heater, you will extend your swimming season and enjoy your pool year-round with family and friends. Investing in a solar pool heating system is a smart solar solution, as this proven and reliable technology will increase your home value and offers long-term performance with low maintenance. In general, a properly sized solar pool heater will maintain 80˚ degrees minimum all year under normal weather conditions. (See “What will a Solar Pool Heater do for you?” chart.)

System Function and Sizing

A solar pool heating system requires that large amounts of water (thousands of gallons) be heated to moderate, comfortable swimming temperatures. This technology uses black polypropylene collectors to absorb the sun’s heat and uses your existing pool equipment to circulate the warm water. Stilwell’s solar pool heaters are fully customized specifically for your home and pool. We professionally design our solar pool heaters based on several factors including: the size of your pool, orientation of the solar panels, temperature expectations and pool usage.

Your Investment

Solar pool heating is currently the most cost-effective use of solar energy. Most systems can be installed for $2500.00 to $4000.00 and will often pay for themselves in as little as 2 years compared to other heat sources. As energy prices rise, more homeowners are turning to renewable energy sources such as solar to save money and preserve our natural resources. Unlike other pool heaters, solar has no ongoing operational costs, so you will never have to turn your heater off due to high operating costs. By taking advantage of the sun’s abundant free energy, you are ensuring a bright future for following generations. Like our other solar options, solar pool heating systems require minimal maintenance and will continue to save you money and energy for 15 years or more!

How does a solar pool heater work?

How does a pool heater workSolar Pool heating systems use black polypropylene panels to absorb solar radiation. Your current pool pump circulates the pool water through the series of solar panels to warm the water. A manual valve or automatic solar control allows you to regulate the temperature.

What size system will I need to heat my pool?

Solar pool heaters are sized for each homeowner individually, based on three main factors: pool size, direction the solar panels will be facing, and customer temperature expectations.

Do the solar panels have to face south?

Not necessarily, solar pool panels should be installed where they can be mounted in the sun a good portion of the day. Depending on the angle of the mounting surface, East and West facing systems can work equally as well.

How do I control the temperature of my pool?

Basic or Manual Control systems use a simple three-way valve; turn the valve one way for “on”, the other way for “off”. An Automatic Control system is an upgrade that will make solar operation simple and more efficient. You set the temperature and the control will turn on when solar energy is available and will bypass the solar when your desired temperature is obtained.

Will my Homeowners Association allow me to install solar panels?

Florida law (FL Statue Sec163.04) forbids ordinances, deed restriction, covenants, or similar binding agreements from prohibiting solar equipment use. Under this law, a homeowner may not be denied - by “any entity granted the power or right in any deed restriction, covenant or similar binding agreement to approve, forbid, control or direct alteration of property…” - permission to install a solar system or other energy devise using renewable resources. We can assist you through the process of obtaining approval from your association.

Do I need to use a pool cover?

A cover is not necessary for most of the year in South Florida, however to maintain temperatures of 80 or higher during our mild winter months (when evening temperatures drop below 65˚) a pool cover will keep the heat in your pool. Besides heat savings, pool covers also do the following: conserve water caused by evaporation, reduce the pool's chemical consumption by 35%–60% and reduce cleaning time by keeping dirt and other debris out of the pool.
